Tigers 8, Reds 2 – Matt Vierling hits a grand slam as Reese Olson pitches the Tigers past the Reds 8-2
Matt Vierling hit a grand slam, Reese Olson pitched six sharp innings and the Detroit Tigers beat the Cincinnati Reds 8-2. Akil Baddoo also went deep for Detroit, which salvaged the finale of the three-game series. Kerry Carpenter and Spencer Torkelson each drove in a run.  Olson permitted one run and two hits. The rookie right-hander struck out seven and walked four. Spencer Steer and TJ Friedl homered for the Reds, who had won three straight. Vierling’s eighth-inning grand slam came against former Tigers pitcher Buck Farmer. It was his ninth homer of the season.

Twins 10, White Sox 2 – Twins hit 3 homers, get strong start from Maeda in 10-2 win over White Sox
Kyle Farmer hit a two-run homer to cap Minnesota’s four-run seventh inning, Kenta Maeda threw seven strong innings and the Twins routed the Chicago White Sox 10-2. Rookies Edouard Julien and Royce Lewis hit solo shots in the fourth to get the Twins rolling and help first-place Minnesota (77-70) extend its lead in the AL Central to eight games over idle Cleveland. Matt Wallner drove in two runs with a single in the seventh break to break open a tight game. Alex Kirilloff added two RBIs on his second hit of the night as the Twins tacked on four unearned runs in the ninth. Chicago’s Andrew Vaughn hit his 20th homer, a two-run shot in the seventh, for the only runs off Maeda (5-7).

NFL – National Football League – Week 2
Last Night
Philadelphia Eagles 34, Minnesota Vikings 28

Eagles 34, Vikings 28 – Hurts runs for 2 TDs, throws for a score as Eagles hold off fumble-prone Vikings 34-28
Jalen Hurts ran for a pair of 1-yard touchdowns and threw a 63-yard TD pass to DeVonta Smith, D’Andre Swift ran for 175 yards and a score, and the NFC champion Philadelphia Eagles held off the turnover-prone Minnesota Vikings 34-28. Hurts shook off a sluggish passing performance in the first half when he connected with Smith for the scoring strike in the third quarter that made it 27-7. It almost wasn’t enough as Kirk Cousins tried to rally the Vikings late. But Minnesota couldn’t overcome four lost fumbles as it fell to 0-2. The Eagles are 2-0.

NFL – Hyped-up Lions host Seahawks in home opener
Desperate for a winner, it looks as if Detroit might finally have one. The Lions went into the season with high expectations after winning eight of their last 10 games last season and making enough moves to become the favorites to win the NFC North. The hype about the team picked up plenty of steam when Detroit beat the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs on their home field in the league’s opening game. Fans will fill every seat at Ford Field on Sunday when the Lions host the Seattle Seahawks.

NFL – Confident Mayfield looks to build on early success when Buccaneers host Bears
Baker Mayfield is off to a winning start with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, impressing his new team with what he hasn’t done on the field rather than dazzling statistics. That includes a turnover-free preseason, followed by a solid regular-season debut in which he also avoided costly mistakes to help Tampa Bay launch the post-Tom Brady era with a 20-17 victory over the Minnesota Vikings. Next up is a test against Justin Fields and the Chicago Bears, who visit Raymond James Stadium on Sunday.

NCAAFB – JJ McCarthy leading on and off field for Michigan, which hosts Bowling Green
J.J. McCarthy is leading No. 2 Michigan on and off the field. Coach Jim Harbaugh says his quarterback reminds him of Andrew Luck, who starred at Stanford before heading to the NFL. Harbaugh says McCarthy has the presence and the demeanor of a leader. McCarthy is 48 of 55 for 558 yards with five touchdown passes this season without an interception. Michigan hosts Bowling Green on Saturday night.

NCAAFB – No. 9 Notre Dame looks to improve to 10-0 against MAC foes when CMU visits
Notre Dame usually dominates Mid-American Conference opponents. They’re 9-0 all-time in these matchups. But as the ninth-ranked Fighting Irish try to extend that streak to a perfect 10, Central Michigan coach Jim McElwain has a simple message for his underdog team —- don’t lose sight of what you’re playing for Saturday. Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman also is aware of the program’s recent scares against MAC foes. The Irish held on for a 24-16 victory over Ball State in 2018 and needed an 18-yard TD pass in the final 95 seconds two years ago to rally past Toledo.

NCAAFB – Michigan State hosts No. 8 Washington minus coach Mel Tucker
Michigan State hosts No. 8 Washington on Saturday without coach Mel Tucker who was suspended this week pending results of an investigation into allegations of sexual harassment. The Spartans (2-0) will be led by interim coach Harlon Barnett. Washington (2-0) provides a huge challenge with quarterback Michael Penix Jr. and the No. 1 rated passing offense in FBS. The Huskies are averaging 472 yards per game and QB Michael Penix Jr. leads in total offense. The Spartans have allowed only 412 yards of offense and registered 23 tackles for a loss in their first two games.

In a court filing, Tennessee couple fights allegations that they got rich off Michael Oher
A Memphis, Tennessee, couple who took in former NFL offensive lineman Michael Oher when he was in high school denied in court documents filed Thursday that they used a legal agreement between them to get rich at his expense and lied about intending to adopt him. Lawyers for Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy filed a response to Oher’s Aug. 14 request for a judge to end a conservatorship signed in 2004 when Oher was an 18-year-old high school football player. Oher had a troubled childhood and moved in with the Tuohys, in a story that was the subject of the film “The Blind Side.”

Golf – PGA – Justin Thomas scuffles for 69, Lucas Herbert shoots 63 for 1st-round lead
Justin Thomas scuffled through an uneven afternoon with a 3-under 69 in his return to the PGA Tour following a lengthy layoff, leaving him six shots off the lead Thursday in the first round of the Fortinet Championship. Thomas, the former No. 1 player in the world who was a captain’s pick for the Ryder Cup, had hoped to clean up his game in a final tune-up, but wasn’t nearly as sharp at Silverado Resort as he hoped. Playing for the first time since finishing 12th at the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, North Carolina, on Aug. 6, Thomas made four birdies and worked around a bogey on the par-4 ninth. He was tied for 20th, chasing Lucas Herbert, the leader after a 6-under 63.
