Astros 2, Tigers 1 – Javier leads Astros over Tigers 2-1 for 7-game season sweep
Cristian Javier allowed two hits in six shutout innings, and the Houston Astros beat Detroit 2-1 for a seven-game season sweep of the Tigers. Javier struck out eight and walked none, winning for the third time in four decisions. Ryan Pressly pitched a one-hit ninth for his 28th save in 32 chances, finishing a four-hitter. The AL-best Astros are losing in on their sixth straight postseason appearance. Last-place Detroit is on the verge of its first 90-loss season since 2019.

Rockies 3, White Sox 0 – Freeland outduels Cease, Rockies blank White Sox 3-0
Kyle Freeland outdueled Dylan Cease and put a dent in a push by the Chicago White Sox for a playoff spot, pitching 6 2/3 shutout innings as the Colorado Rockies earned a 3-0 victory. The White Sox fell four games behind AL Central-leading Cleveland with 19 games remaining. Chicago travels to Cleveland for a makeup game Thursday, and the teams return to Chicago for a three-game series starting Sept. 20. Freeland frustrated a Chicago lineup that was 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position. He worked around seven hits and three walks, striking out five. Freeland has posted a 2.17 ERA over his last four starts. Chicago fell to 20-9 in games started by Cease.

Cubs 6, Mets 3 – Peterson tagged early, Mets fall to Cubs 6-3 and get swept
David Peterson got only one out and the slumping New York Mets fell behind early in a 6-3 loss that completed a three-game sweep by the Chicago Cubs. The NL East leaders lost their fifth consecutive home game and dropped to 5-7 in a 16-game stretch against Washington, Pittsburgh, Miami and Chicago — all more than 20 games under .500 this season. New York remained a half-game ahead of the Braves in the division race after they lost in San Francisco earlier. Pete Alonso and Tomás Nido homered for the Mets, who scored six runs in the series and got swept for the fourth time this year.

NFL – Bears hope improvement on offense continues in Green Bay
The Chicago Bears hope the improvement their offense showed in the second half of their season-opening win carries over to their game at rival Green Bay this week. Chicago started to click in the second half against San Francisco and pulled out a surprising 19-10 win in coach Matt Eberflus’ debut. The Bears finished with 204 yards after managing just 68 in the first two quarters. But there were sparks in the second half that they hope can propel them forward.

NFL – NFL on Prime Video latest foray by leagues into streaming
The NFL is set to make its debut with a streaming service on Thursday night. Amazon Prime Video will show the Los Angeles Chargers’ game against the Kansas City Chiefs. It’s the highest-profile of a series of deals between sports leagues and streaming services. NHL games will be shown on both ESPN+ and Hulu. Major League Baseball has deals with Apple TV+ and Peacock. Industry experts say viewers are becoming more comfortable with streaming games and advances in technology have made it seamless.

NFL – More than 121 million watched NFL games on opening weekend
More than 121 million fans watched a telecast of an NFL game during the league’s opening week, a 5% increase over last season. The league and Nielsen say the average viewership for all games was 18.5 million. That’s the NFL’s best opening weekend in six years and up 3% from last year. NBC had the two highest-viewed games. Tampa Bay’s 19-3 win over Dallas Sunday night averaged 24.5 million and last Thursday’s opening game, in which Buffalo routed the defending Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams 31-10, attracted 21.3 million.

A’ja Wilson has the Las Vegas Aces one victory away from the franchise’s first WNBA championship. She has been dominant on both ends of the court for the Aces, becoming the first player in WNBA history to have over 20 points and 10 rebounds in five consecutive playoff games. Las Vegas leads the best-of-five series 2-0, and Game 3 against the Sun is Thursday night in Connecticut.

NCAAFB – FBS ADs urge college football reform, but not NCAA breakaway
The athletic directors who lead the schools that play major college football want the sport to continue be governed by the NCAA. But only if that governance can be streamlined. LEAD1, an association of Bowl Subdivision ADs, convened 105 of its 131 members for a meeting in Washington that focused mostly on how best to govern major college football. There has been some momentum in the past year to seriously explore breaking FBS away from the NCAA and creating another structure to run the biggest revenue-generator in college sports. For now, though, the preference is for reform within the current structure.

NCAAFB – Oklahoma games versus SEC’s Georgia, Tennessee postponed
Oklahoma’s regular-season games against Southeastern Conference teams will have to wait until the Sooners are officially a member. The SEC says it has instructed Georgia and Tennessee to postpone home-and-home games scheduled for the next two seasons. The second meetings with both teams were scheduled for after Oklahoma and Texas leave the Big 12 and start playing in the SEC in 2025. Georgia was set to visit Oklahoma in 2023. The Sooners were scheduled for a game at Tennessee in 2024. They’ll replace the Georgia games with SMU.

Court revives lawsuits against Ohio State over sex abuse
A federal appeals court is reviving unsettled lawsuits against Ohio State University over decades-old sexual abuse by the late team doctor Richard Strauss. A judge had dismissed most of the unsettled cases last year. The judge acknowledged it’s clear hundreds of young men were abused, but said the legal time limit for the claims had long passed. The plaintiffs argued the clock didn’t start until the allegations came to light in 2018. A three-judge panel of the Sixth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals reversed the judge’s decision Wednesday and sent the case back to district court for further proceedings.

Soccer – Nike releases US World Cup jerseys some criticize as bland
Nike released the United States’ World Cup jerseys Thursday, including a mostly white design for home matches that was criticized in advance by a pair of American players and some fans. The home jerseys have red and blue stripes on each sleeve. “We just as angry as y’all !!!” forward Tim Weah wrote last month after a version of the home jersey was posted online. “Tried to tell them” midfielder Weston McKennie wrote. The bright blue away jersey has an ice-dying technique somewhat akin to a tie-dye pattern.

Mom must pay $9K for telling daughter to hit sports opponent
A California mother must pay more than $9,000 in restitution and apologize to a teenage basketball player she told her daughter to hit during a youth basketball game in 2021. The woman’s daughter punched the rival player in the neck and she collapsed on the court following the attack that was recorded on cellphone video. Latira Shonty Hunt was criminally charged last year and an Orange County judge on Wednesday allowed Hunt to participate in a diversion program. Hunt’s lawyer says Hunt and her daughter took responsibility for their actions. An attorney for the teenage victim’s family did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

ECHL – Indianapolis suburb planning 8,500-seat sports arena
The Indianapolis suburb of Fishers is luring the Indy Fuel minor league hockey team to the city with a planned 8,500-seat arena. Officials announced Wednesday that the new arena would be a key part of a $550 million project planned by a developer for hotel, apartments, retail and office space along Interstate 69. The Indy Fuel, an affiliate of the NHL’s Chicago Blackhawks, has been playing its home games at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in Indianapolis since 2014. Plans call for the team to move to the new arena for the 2024-25 season. Fishers Mayor Scott Fadness says the building would be used to host other events such as concerts and high school sports.

MILB – Minor leaguers form union, 17 days after organizing began
More than 5,500 minor league baseball players have formed a union, completing a lightning-fast organization campaign that launched just 17 days earlier in an effort to boost annual salaries as low as $10,400. Martin Scheinman, the sport’s independent arbitrator, notified Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association that a majority of the 5,567 players in the minor league bargaining unit had signed union authorization cards since the drive started Aug. 28. He did not provide the sides a specific number. MLB had agreed Saturday that it would voluntarily accept a union if there was majority support.
