MLB – Home run hands! Dallas fan catches Judge’s 62nd homer on fly
Dallas baseball fan Cory Youmans made the catch of a lifetime, snagging the ball that New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge hit for his American League-record 62nd home run. Youmans caught the prized souvenir on the fly Tuesday night at Globe Life Field, home of the Texas Rangers. Youmans, who works in the financial world, said he hasn’t decided what he’ll do with ball. Youmans was at the second game of a doubleheader between the Yankees and Rangers when Judge led off with a home run. Soon after a local TV station posted a brief interview with the lucky fan, Bri Amaranthus tweeted: “THIS IS MY HUSBAND.” Amaranthus works in local media and identifies herself in her Twitter bio as an alum of ABC’s “The Bachelor.”

NHL – Coaching carousel leaves 10 NHL teams with new face on bench
Nearly a third of NHL teams have a new coach this season. John Tortorella is being counted on to fix things in Philadellphia. Bruce Cassidy is tasked with getting Vegas back to the playoffs and into contention for the Stanley Cup. Former Vegas coach Peter DeBoer takes over in Dallas in his fifth job around the league. Boston is giving Jim Montgomery a second chance after parting ways with Cassidy. David Quinn is also back in the NHL with San Jose after coaching the U.S. Olympic team in Beijing.  Former Tampa Bay Lightning assistant Derek LaLonde is now the head coach in Detroit and former NHL player Luke Richardson is the new coach for the Chicago Blackhawks.

NHL – Blackhawks assign prospect Lukas Reichel to Rockford
The Chicago Blackhawks have assigned forward prospect Lukas Reichel to the minors. The 20-year-old was selected by Chicago with the No. 17 pick in the 2020 draft. He made his NHL debut last season and recorded an assist in 11 games. Sending Reichel back to Rockford puts him in position to play major minutes with the AHL team, instead of a smaller role with the rebuilding Blackhawks.

NCAAFB – Big Ten – Big Ten West teams are mild, but division race could be wild
The Big Ten West is a mess. It’s also mesmerizing. Wisconsin and Nebraska already have fired their head coaches. Minnesota took up the mantle as West favorite last week and was upset at home. Illinois is one of the hottest teams in the nation after outscoring two nonconference opponents and Wisconsin 89-13. Even Nebraska suddenly thinks it could make a run. Six teams are 1-1 in conference play and tied for first place. It’s the first time since the 2014 East-West split that one of the divisions has had such a logjam.

NWSL – US players ‘horrified’ by report of abuse in women’s soccer
Players on the U.S. women’s national soccer team are trying to process an investigation that found emotional abuse and sexual misconduct are systemic in women’s soccer. U.S. defender Becky Sauerbrunn says she is horrified by the report. Former acting U.S. Attorney General Sally Q. Yates and the law firm of King & Spaulding released the report after being retained by U.S. Soccer to investigate allegations of abuse in the National Women’s Soccer League following a series of scandals last year. Several of the national team players also play in the league.

Olympics – Olympic pentathlon eyes ‘Ninja Warrior’ courses for survival
The sport of modern pentathlon hopes to stave off Olympic removal by possibly adding “American Ninja Warrior” style obstacle courses. The show-jumping component of the five-event competition has become an issue after a German coach was filmed hitting an uncooperative horse during the Tokyo Olympics in 2021. As it stands now, modern pentathlon in its current form will be off the program after the 2024 Paris Games. To get back on, the organization is testing out obstacle-course racing to replace show jumping. Which means ring swings and rope mazes could take center stage for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. It could be the scene that saves a sport facing a major crossroads.
