Angels 6, Tigers 0/Angels 11, Tigers 4 – Ohtani throws 1st MLB shutout, hits 2 HRs as Angels sweep Tigers
Shohei Ohtani threw his first shutout in Major League Baseball in one game and hit two homers in the next, helping the Los Angeles Angels beat the Detroit Tigers twice on Thursday to sweep a three-game series. Ohtani gave the team a scare when he left the second game of the doubleheader due to cramps that led to him grimacing after hitting his 38th homer in the fourth inning. He had a one-hitter and struck out eight as the Angels beat Detroit 6-0 in the first game and cleared the fences twice in an 11-4 victory in the second game. Ohtani became the first major league player to throw a shutout in one game of a doubleheader and hit a homer — much less two — in the other.
Ohtani (9-5) did not allow a baserunner until the fifth inning of his start and walked three batters on the same day the Angels confirmed they’re not trading him.  Michael Lorenzen (5-7) gave up three runs and five hits while walking one and striking out seven over five innings in what might have been his final start with Detroit.  Patrick Sandoval (6-7) gave up two runs in five innings in the second game and Manning (3-2) took the loss, allowing seven runs over five innings.

Cubs 10, Cardinals 3 – Cubs beat Cardinals 10-3 after a testy start to get back to .500
Yan Gomes drove in three runs and the Chicago Cubs got back to .500 with their sixth straight victory, beating the St. Louis Cardinals 10-3 after a testy start. In the first inning, Cubs outfielder Ian Happ bloodied St. Louis catcher Willson Contreras when he hit him in the head with a long follow-through on a swing, then was soon hit himself by a pitch from Miles Mikolas. Mikolas and Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol being ejected. At 51-51, Chicago is at the .500 mark for the first time since sitting at 19-19 following a victory May 12 in Minnesota. Cody Bellinger, Christopher Morel and Mike Tauchman each had three hits for the Cubs to back left-hander Justin Steele (11-3).

Guardians 6, White Sox 3 – Naylor drives in 3, Bibee pitches into 7th inning as Guardians beat White Sox 6-3
Josh Naylor drove in three runs, rookie Tanner Bibee pitched into the seventh inning and the Cleveland Guardians beat the Chicago White Sox 6-3. Manager Terry Francona tied Casey Stengel for 13th place on baseball’s career wins list with his 1,926th victory. And the Guardians handed the White Sox their sixth straight loss even though Jake Burger hit two homers. Naylor drove in two with a double and scored in a three-run third against Dylan Cease (4-4) that gave the Guardians a 4-0 lead. He also had a strange RBI double in the seventh when reliever Aaron Bummer deflected his soft comebacker. The ball trickled into center field, and Andrés Giménez scored on the play to make it 5-3.

Fleck says he has the full support of athletic director Mark Coyle and the university leadership.

NCAA – Colorado leaving Pac-12 and returning to Big 12 in 2024
The Colorado board of regents has voted unanimously to leave the Pac-12 Conference and return to the Big 12. The Pac-12 has seemed vulnerable to more poaching. It will lose USC and UCLA to the Big Ten next year and has spent months trying to land a new media rights contract. Now Colorado is leaving at the same time. The Buffaloes say money wasn’t the only lure back to the league where it was a founding member. Chancellor Philip DiStefano noted that Colorado will have more favorable start times across three time zones that will provide better exposure for the school.

Nassar – Nassar survivors sue MSU over alleged ‘secret decisions’ on releasing documents
Women who were sexually assaulted by former Michigan State University sports doctor Larry Nassar have filed a lawsuit claiming school officials made “secret decisions” about releasing documents in the case. The suit filed Thursday in Michigan names the school and its trustee board. It says those decisions and “secret votes” by a public body violated the Open Meetings Act and state constitution. The group of survivors and parents say the lawsuit seeks accountability, not money. Nassar was sentenced to 40 to 175 years in prison after he admitted to molesting some of the nation’s top gymnasts under the guise of medical treatment. He was accused of sexually assaulting hundreds of women and girls.
