NCAAMBKB – Michigan’s Juwan Howard returns, has meetings with players
Juwan Howard has resumed his role as Michigan’s basketball coach after serving a five-game suspension for hitting a Wisconsin assistant in the head. Howard met individually with each player Monday. The Wolverines are on the NCAA Tournament bubble with a 17-13 record overall and 11-9 mark in the Big Ten. Michigan closed the regular season with a win over then-No. 23 Ohio State on the road Sunday. Howard will be back on the sideline Thursday in Indianapolis, leading the eighth-seeded Wolverines against ninth-seeded Indiana in the conference tournament quarterfinals.

NCAAMBKB – Gonzaga remains atop AP Top 25; Tennessee cracks top 10
Gonzaga, Arizona and reigning national champion Baylor remained atop The Associated Press men’s college basketball poll. Monday’s poll also saw Tennessee crack the top 10 and North Carolina return to the poll at No. 25. Mark Few’s Bulldogs claimed 52 of 61 first-place votes to hold the No. 1 ranking for the fourth straight week and eighth time this season going back to the preseason poll. Tennessee jumped into a tie for No. 9 for its first top-10 appearance this year. Colorado State joined UNC as the week’s new additions. Ohio State and Alabama fell out from last week’s poll.

NCAAMBKB – WMU Head Coach Clayton Bates steps down
Western Michigan University Head Coach Clayton Bates has officially stepped down as head coach of the Broncos men’s basketball team.  Bates went 13-39 in his two seasons as Western’s head coach, during which the Broncos went 8-28 in the Mid-American Conference.  The Broncos finished last in the MAC this past season and did not qualify for the MAC Tournament.

NHL – NHL suspends agreement with Russia-based KHL
The NHL has suspended its dealings with the Russia-based KHL. The NHL told its teams to cease contact with KHL counterparts and Russia-based agents as part of the suspension of the memorandum of understanding between the leagues. The move could make it more difficult for NHL teams to sign players from the KHL. They can continue to communicate with North American agents certified by the NHL Players’ Association. Daily Faceoff first reported the NHL cutting cites with the KHL, and NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly confirmed the decision in an email to The Associated Press. It’s the league’s latest move to sever ties with Russia after its invasion of Ukraine.

MLB – Despite vitriol, MLB owners, locked-out players closing gap
For all the vitriol, Major League Baseball owners and players have closed the gap in recent weeks and are negotiating on similar frameworks for a new collective bargaining agreement. With the lockout in its 96th day, the sides remained apart to various degrees on three of the most significant items: the luxury tax, pre-arbitration bonus pool and minimum salary. Openers on March 31 were among 91 games already canceled, and Commissioner Rob Manfred appeared to be on the verge of calling off more.

MLB – Labor relations experts following MLB negotiations from afar
Allen Sanderson worked for a minor league team when he was growing up in Idaho, providing a ride home for Dick Allen long before he became a feared slugger with the Phillies. That’s part of how Sanderson sees baseball’s labor strife, as a longtime baseball fan. But he also follows along from a different perspective, one of a sports economist at the University of Chicago. He says there is no right answer when it comes to the division of profits between owners and players. Some experts are watching the talks more from an academic viewpoint while the sides try to chart a path forward, hoping to get baseball back on the field.

NFL – Falcons WR Ridley suspended for ’22 for bets on NFL games
Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Calvin Ridley has been suspended for the 2022 season for betting on NFL games in the 2021 season. The suspension announced by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is for activity that took place while Ridley was away from the team while addressing mental health concerns. The league says the suspension will carry “through at least the conclusion of the 2022 season.” The NFL says the betting took place during a five-day period in late November 2021. The team released a statement on Monday in which it said it cooperated with the league’s investigation in the last month.

WNBA – Brittney Griner’s wife thanks fans for support after arrest
Brittney Griner’s wife Cherelle has thanked everyone for their support of the WNBA star, who was arrested last month in Russia. Cherelle Griner posted a picture Sunday on Instagram of her with the Phoenix Mercury center. There has been an outpouring of support for Griner on social media from WNBA players as well as other athletes. Many have voiced their concerns for Griner’s physical well-being as well as her mental health. Griner was detained at a Moscow airport after Russian authorities said a search of her luggage revealed vape cartridges. They were identified as containing oil derived from cannabis.

Tennis – Zverev put on 1-year probation for outburst in Acapulco
Tokyo Olympics gold medalist Alexander Zverev has been put on probation for one year by the ATP for violently hitting the chair umpire’s stand repeatedly with his racket following a loss in doubles at the Mexico Open. If Zverev receives a code violation that results in a fine for unsportsmanlike conduct or for verbal or physical abuse at a tournament, he will be suspended for eight weeks from ATP events and fined an additional $25,000.  Zverev has until Friday to appeal the ruling. The 24-year-old German was kicked out of last month’s tournament in Acapulco, where he was the defending champion.

Ice-fishing shanty blown across Michigan bay; anglers safe
Authorities say three anglers are safe after a homemade ice-fishing shanty was blown about a mile across a bay in Michigan by winds that neared 50 mph. The Huron County sheriff’s office says a person onshore called dispatchers about 8 a.m. Sunday after seeing someone struggling with the shanty as it was being blown across the ice on Saginaw Bay off McKinley Township. The shanty, which had been occupied by three men, was about 1.5 miles offshore when deputies arrived. The three men were able to make it across the ice to shore on their own and refused medical treatment. McKinley Township is located in Michigan’s Thumb region, about 120 miles north of Detroit.
