Tigers vs. Royals – Cabrera hits 511th homer as Tigers lead Royals 4-0 in a game suspended until Thursday by rain
Miguel Cabrera hit his 511th home run to help the Detroit Tigers take a 4-0 lead over the Kansas City Royals in a game that was suspended by rain after four innings. Cabrera, who is retiring after the season ends this week, tied Mel Ott for 25th place all time. It was Cabrera’s 378th homer for Detroit, tying Norm Cash for second place in franchise history behind Al Kaline’s 399. The game, which was delayed for 80 minutes, will be resumed Thursday afternoon at 1 p.m. before the scheduled series finale.

Braves 6, Cubs 5 – F/10 – Acuña becomes first 40-70 player, Albies lifts Braves over Cubs 6-5 in 10 innings
Ronald Acuña Jr. established the 40-70 club, Ozzie Albies walked him off with a 10th-inning single and the Atlanta Braves dealt the Chicago Cubs another devastating setback. This time, the Braves clinched home-field advantage throughout the NL playoffs with a 6-5 victory. Acuña delivered a run-scoring single that tied the game at 5, swiped his 70th base and second of the night. He has 41 homers, extending a historic season that already saw him become the first 40-50 and 40-60 player. Chicago dropped into a tie with Miami for the NL’s third and final wild card at 82-76.

Diamondbacks 3, White Sox 0 – Diamondbacks move closer to wild card, beat White Sox 3-0
Rookie Brandon Pfaadt pitched shutout ball for the second time in three starts, and the Arizona Diamondbacks moved closer to an NL wild card berth by beating the Chicago White Sox 3-0 for their eighth win in 10 games. Corbin Carroll hit a two-run double in a three-run third, giving the rookie 76 RBIs, and Tommy Pham had an RBI single. Arizona (84-74) is in position for the second of three NL wild card slots, two games ahead of the Chicago Cubs and Miami (both 82-76). The Diamondbacks were 50-34 on July 1 before a 7-25 slide.

NFL – Lions seek to take early control of North by beating Packers for 4th straight time
The Detroit Lions knocked the Green Bay Packers out of playoff contention the previous time they visited Lambeau Field. The Lions return to Green Bay nearly nine months later to try to take early control of the NFC North by beating the division’s traditional heavyweight. The Lions and Packers enter this Thursday night showdown tied for first place in the division with 2-1 records. The Lions have won each of their past three matchups with the Packers.  Although Green Bay has an 105-75-7 edge in its series with Detroit, the Lions have won the past three matchups. In the final week of the 2022 season, the Lions won 20-16 at Green Bay to prevent the Packers from reaching the playoffs. Detroit is coming off a 20-6 triumph over Atlanta, who beat the Packers 25-24 a week earlier.

NFL – Winless Broncos put historic loss in rearview as they prepare for Bears
The Denver Broncos returned to work Wednesday looking ahead to their trip to Chicago this weekend for their basement brawl between winless teams and not behind at their historic 70-20 loss at Miami. The loss was the second-biggest for the Broncos in the Super Bowl era, behind only a 51-0 loss to the Raiders in 1967. Right tackle Mike McGlinchey said his message to his teammates was one win can turn things around. He was on the 49ers team that started 3-4 last year before winning 12 games in a row to reach the NFC championship.

NCAAFB – MSU fires Mel Tucker for bringing ridicule to school, breaching his contract
Michigan State has fired Mel Tucker, saying the suspended football coach failed to present adequate reasons why he should not be fired for cause after having what he described as consensual phone sex with an activist and rape survivor. The school said Wednesday that it terminated what’s left of Tucker’s $95 million, 10-year contract for acknowledging actions that subjected the institution to ridicule, among other reasons. The woman said Tucker sexually harassed her during the phone call in April 2022. Michigan State informed the 51-year-old Tucker that it planned to fire him on Sept. 18 and gave him a week to respond, which he did on Monday.

NCAAFB – CFP puts off decisions on format tweaks with Pac-12 still in limbo
The number of spots reserved for conference champions when the College Football Playoff expands to 12 teams next year remains up in the air. Administrators who manage the sport wrapped up a day-and-a-half of meetings outside of Chicago that mostly focused on hearing from potential television partners. They didn’t talk at all about whether five or six conferences champions should have automatic access to the playoff. CFP Executive Director Bill Hancock says the conference commissioners who make up the management committee heard from five potential television partners.

NBA – Damian Lillard traded from the Trail Blazers to the Bucks in 3-team deal
Damian Lillard was traded by Portland to play alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo in Milwaukee on Wednesday. The deal ends his 11-year run with the Trail Blazers and a a three-month saga surrounding Lillard’s wish to be moved elsewhere in hopes of winning an NBA title. The seven-time All-Star goes from the Trail Blazers to the Bucks in a three-team deal that sends Jrue Holiday from the Bucks to Portland, Deandre Ayton from Phoenix to Portland and Jusuf Nurkic from the Blazers to the Suns.

NBA – Former first daughter tells AP about helping lead NBA’s social responsibility
Barbara Bush never got to any of the NBA championship celebrations held at the White House when her grandfather was president of the United States. Never got to one when her father occupied the Oval Office, either. She got to the one held for Golden State earlier this year as an NBA employee. The former first daughter has very quietly worked for the NBA for the past year after connecting with the league during the pandemic on some health-related and social justice initiatives. The league has now announced that Bush was recently promoted to lead its social responsibility department, helping oversee initiatives surrounding racial justice, public service and more.

Golf – Rory McIlroy once called the Ryder Cup an exhibition. He knows better now
The Ryder Cup is no exhibition. That’s how Rory McIlroy referred to it before playing in his first one and he laughs at those words now. McIlroy read comments he made 14 years ago about how it wouldn’t mean all that much to him and he wouldn’t be fist-pumping. That changed when he played his first one in Wales in 2010. And now he’s the most experienced Ryder Cup player at Marco Simone and a de facto leader of Team Europe. McIlroy wants to be sure younger players look over to him without looking up to him.
