BOYS’ BASKETBALL

St. Joe 41,  Lakeshore 36
St. Joe rallied for a 41-36 win over Lakeshore. The Lancers held the Bears scoreless in the first quarter and led by as many as 13 points. St. Joe broke through in the fourth quarter, outscoring Lakeshore 22-8. The Bears got a game high 14 points from Izak Ruddell. Jon Bowman led Lakeshore with 8.

Howardsville Christian 81,  Michigan Lutheran 35
Michigan Lutheran suffered from a slow start as they fell to Howardsville Christian 81-35. The Eagles grabbed a 22-4 lead after the first quarter and never looked back. Dylan Jergens poured in a game high 35 points for Christian, Lucas Withers added 15. Cameron Guse scored 13 points in the loss for Lutheran.

Parchment 49,  Bridgman 45
Parchment scored a 49-45 win over Bridgman. The Bees led 23-17 at the half, but managed just four points in the third quarter while Parchment scored 19. Bridgman battled back in the fourth quarter, but the rally fell short. Nick Boyd led Bridgman with 15 points, Hunter Adams added 13.

Watervliet 59,  Martin 46
A balanced offensive and defensive effort led Watervliet to a 59-46 season opening win over Martin. The Panthers limited Martin to just 15 points in the first half. Offensively, Bryant Kieft led the way with 12 points. Sheldon Tobar and Jakob Aldrich each added 11 points.

Niles 54,  Portage Northern 44
Niles took advantage of a strong start in posting a 54-44 win over Portage Northern. The Vikings jumped out to a 32-17 halftime lead and held on down the stretch. Solid play from seniors Chad Barton, Johnny Bybee, and Robert Brown led the way. Brown turned in 15 points and ten rebounds, Barton finished with six points, seven rebounds, and three steals, and Bybee scored 12 points to go along with four rebounds.

Gobles 71,  Lawrence 44
Peyton Austin poured in 27 points as Gobles beat Lawrence 71-44. Tyler Stedman added 18 points for the Tigers and Karsen Tackett finished with 11.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

St. Joe 53,  Lakeshore 29
St. Joe pulled away in the second half to post a 53-29 win over Lakeshore. The Bears led by just one after the first quarter and by 11 at the half. The St. Joe defense then held the Lancers to just 15 points over the final two quarters. The Bears got 14 points apiece from Anna Fischer and Emma Inman. LaChelle Knox scored ten for Lakeshore.

Comstock 68,  Berrien Springs 36
Comstock got a game high 23 points from Daisy Ansel as they defeated Berrien Springs 68-36. Kyrah Sanders scored 12 points in the loss for the Shamrocks.

Watervliet 48,  Martin 46
Watervliet rallied for a 48-46 win over Martin. The Panthers scored just 12 points in the first half and trailed by 13 at the break. They then outscored the Clippers by seven in the third quarter and by eight in the fourth to pull it out. Ariana Rowe led Watervliet with 15 points and ten rebounds. Zoe Smith added 11 points and seven rebounds.

Niles 30,  Portage Northern 28
Niles opened up Southwest Michigan Athletic Conference division play with a 30-28 win over Portage Northern. The game was close throughout with Northern leading by two after the first quarter, Niles tied it at ten at the half, and then took a three point lead through three quarters. Niles got a game high 12 points from Alycia Patterson, Lajan Mitchell added six.

Hartford 34,  Bangor 21
Hartford picked up its win of the season as they defeated Bangor 34-21. Leading the way for the Indians was AJ Jackson with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Jessica Cortes chipped in 11 points while Mikenzie Chambers added 6 points and grabbed 8 rebounds.

Otsego 67,  Dowagiac 34
A strong start led Otsego to a 67-34 win over Dowagiac. The Bulldogs ran out to a 26-12 lead after one quarter and extended that lead to 24 points at the half. Grace Verhage scored a game high 15 points for Otsego. Amiyah Smith scored 13 in the loss for the Chieftains.

Gobles 53,  Lawrence 44
A fourth quarter surge lifted Gobles to a 53-44 win over Lawrence. Gobles outscored Lawrence by 12 in the final eight minutes to pull it out. Kaytlyn Tidey finished with 24 points in the loss for Lawrence.

Decatur 51,  Cassopolis 38
Regan Rose scored 18 points to help Decatur top Cassopolis 51-38. The Raiders pulled away early, taking a 22-8 lead into the half. Kyla Smith added 13 points for Decatur. Santaja Gibson poured in a game high 29 points for Cassopolis.

Lakeview 53,  Mattawan 35
Battle Creek Lakeview defeated Mattawan 53-35. The middle two quarters made the difference as the Spartans outscored the Wildcats by seven in the second and by 12 in the third. Natalie Foster scored 19 points in the loss for Mattawan.
