Dodgers 3, Tigers 2 – Muncy’s base hit in 9th lifts Dodgers to 3-2 win over Tigers and extends winning streak to 5
Max Muncy’s base hit with two outs in the ninth inning scored Mookie Betts and gave the Los Angeles Dodgers a 3-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers, extending their winning streak to five games. Muncy lined a curveball from Alex Lange (7-5) into right field. Kerry Carpenter threw home on one bounce as Betts rounded third, but Betts beat the tag when his left hand crossed the plate. The NL West champions reduced their magic number to three for a first-round bye. Spencer Torkelson and Parker Meadows homered for the Tigers, who are 3-2 on their West Coast road trip.

Nationals 4, White Sox 3 – Joey Meneses’ pinch-hit 3-run homer sends Nationals past White Sox 4-3
Joey Meneses pinch-hit a three-run home run in the seventh inning, and the Washington Nationals defeated the Chicago White Sox 4-3. Jackson Rutledge, a former first-round selection, allowed two runs in 6 1/3 innings in his first home start for Washington. The Nationals had lost six of seven. Luis Robert Jr. and Yoán Moncada homered for Chicago, which has lost eight of 11 and 13 of 18. Left-hander Aaron Bummer allowed two of the four hitters he faced to reach, and was lifted when right-handed hitting Meneses was announced as a pinch hitter for Blake Rutherford. Meneses remained in to face right-hander Bryan Shaw and lifted a slider into the visitors’ bullpen in left-center for his 12th home run of the season.

Cubs 14, Pirates 1 – Canario’s grand slam helps Cubs rout Pirates 14-1 to open half-game lead for last wild card
Rookie Alexander Canario hit a grand slam for his first major league home run in an eight-run eighth inning, and the Chicago Cubs ended a five-game losing streak with a 14-1 rout of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Cody Bellinger hit a three-run homer later in the eighth for the Cubs, who are a half-game ahead of Miami for the final NL wild card, with Cincinnati one game behind Chicago. Canario, a 23-year-old who debuted on Sept. 6, had five RBIs. He hit an RBI double in the sixth for his first big league hit.

MLB – Tigers outfielder Riley Greene will have surgery on his right elbow
Detroit Tigers outfielder Riley Greene will have surgery on his right elbow on Wednesday in Dallas. The team termed the procedure as a “surgical intervention to address the elbow sprain.” The extent of the injury and rehab timetable will be known after the surgery by Texas Rangers team physician Dr. Keith Meister. He was injured while making a diving catch on a line drive by Tim Anderson during the fifth inning of a Sept. 1 game against the Chicago White Sox.

MLB – Cubs place Nick Madrigal on IL, recall Jared Young from minors
The sliding Chicago Cubs placed infielder Nick Madrigal on the 10 injured list, retroactive to Sept. 17 with a right hamstring strain and recalled infielder Jared Young from Triple-A Iowa before Tuesday night’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Wrigley Field.  Madrigal, batting .263 with two homers and 28 RBIs in 92 games, left in the 10th inning Saturday’s 7-6 13-inning loss at Arizona. He missed most of July with a similar injury. Manager David Ross didn’t have a timetable for Madrigal’s return.

MLB – Ohtani has elbow surgery, Doctor expects hitting by opening day, pitching by ’25
Los Angeles Angels star Shohei Ohtani had elbow surgery Tuesday, and his doctor said he expects the two-way star will be available as a hitter on opening day next season and will return to the mound as a pitcher in 2025. Ohtani tore the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow on Aug. 23, ending his pitching season. He continued as a batter through Sept. 3 until an oblique strain. Los Angeles Dodgers head team physician Dr. Neal ElAttrache operated Tuesday at the Cedars-Sinai Kerlan-Jobe Institute in Los Angeles. He said in a statement that the sides decided to “reinforce the healthy ligament in place,” suggesting the UCL wasn’t reconstructed via Tommy John surgery. ElAttrache performed Tommy John surgery on Ohtani on Oct. 1, 2018.

NCAAFB – Tucker says `other motives’ behind his firing for alleged misconduct
Suspended Michigan State football coach Mel Tucker says he’s “disappointed — but not surprised” that the school intends to fire him for misconduct involving activist and rape survivor Brenda Tracy. In a statement Tuesday, Tucker suggests that “other motives are at play” in the school’s decision. The university informed Tucker on Monday that he will be fired without compensation for misconduct involving Tracy, who said Tucker sexually harassed her during an April 2022 phone call. She later filed a complaint with the school’s Title IX office. Tucker has called the allegations “completely false.” He said Tuesday that, “A cursory reading of the facts and timeline should cause any fair-minded person to conclude that other motives are at play."

NFL – Browns star Nick Chubb to undergo surgery on season-ending knee injury
Cleveland Browns star running back Nick Chubb will undergo surgery on his left knee after suffering a gruesome season-ending injury Monday night in Pittsburgh. A four-time Pro Bowler, Chubb got hurt when Steelers safety Minkah Fitzpatrick tackled him low on a carry in the second quarter. The impact buckled the same knee that Chubb injured in 2015 at Georgia and had reconstructed. Coach Kevin Stefanski did not have any specifics on Chubb’s injury or when he’ll have the operation. The 27-year-old Chubb has rushed for 6,511 yards and scored 48 touchdowns since being drafted in 2018. As Cleveland regroups, the team brought in former Brown Kareem Hunt for a tryout.

NFL – Witness said man was punched before he died at a New England Patriots game
Police are investigating the death of a man following an incident in the stands at a New England Patriots home game. Police and personnel responded to the upper deck at Gillette Stadium shortly before 11 p.m. Sunday. The Norfolk County district attorney’s office says 53-year-old Dale Mooney of Newmarket, New Hampshire, “was in apparent need of medical attention." He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The results of an autopsy are expected Tuesday. The Miami Dolphins defeated the Patriots in Sunday’s game.

NHL – Chicago Blackhawks to play without a captain this season
The Chicago Blackhawks will not have a captain this season. General manager Kyle Davidson made the announcement. Jonathan Toews captained the team for almost 15 years, but he played his last game with the team in April. Davidson says Chicago will have a group of alternate captains. That group will be announced later in training camp, which begins this week. The rebuilding Blackhawks are looking for progress after finishing last in the Central Division with a 26-49-7 record. Following the awful season, they won the NHL draft lottery and selected Connor Bedard with the No. 1 overall pick.

NHL – Beyond Bedard, the NHL’s rookie class is stacked with talented newcomers to watch
Connor Bedard is the most-hyped hockey player since Connor McDavid. But the Chicago Blackhawks top pick is far from the only rookie to watch in the NHL this season. Second and third picks Leo Carlsson of Anaheim and Adam Fantilli of Columbus are also new on the scene. And a few top players from the draft in 2021 and ‘22 also make up this rookie class from Arizona’s Logan Cooley to Toronto’s Matthew Knies and New Jersey’s Luke Hughes. Knies and Hughes already got a taste of pro hockey late last season and in the playoffs to give them a head start on the Calder Trophy race.
