Bruins 3, Blackhawks 1 – Rookie Bedard scores, but Pastrnak pots 2 to lead Bruins past Blackhawks 3-1
David Pastrnak scored twice to give the Boston Bruins a 3-1 victory over Chicago and spoil the first career NHL goal for Blackhawks rookie phenom Connor Bedard. A year after setting NHL records for wins and points the Bruins won their season opener. Trent Frederic also scored for Boston and reigning Vezina Trophy-winner Linus Ullmark made 20 saves. Bruins top rookie Matthew Poitras assisted on Frederic’s goal for his first career NHL point.  The No. 1 overall draft pick also registered his first penalty and gave the Blackhawks a scare when he crashed into the boards skates-first late in the third period and was slow getting up.  He remained in the game and pronounced himself “great” afterward.

Phillies 10, Braves 2 – Bryce Harper slugs 2 more homers as Phillies pound Braves 10-2 in Game 3 of NLDS
Bryce Harper hit a three-run homer and a solo shot to lead the Philadelphia Phillies to a 10-2 win over the Atlanta Braves in Game 3 of the National League Division Series. The Phillies took a 2-1 lead and can advance to the NL Championship Series for the second straight season with a win at home Thursday. Harper’s homers answered ridicule from Braves shortstop Orlando Arcia. Arcia had poked fun at Harper after his baserunning blunder played a role in the Phillies’ loss in Game 2. Nick Castellanos, Trea Turner and Brandon Marsh also homered for the Phillies.

Astros 3, Twins 2 – José Abreu homers again to power the Astros past the Twins 3-2 and into 7th straight ALCS
José Abreu homered for the third time in two games for the Houston Astros in a 3-2 win over the Minnesota Twins. The Astros reached their seventh straight AL Championship Series and eliminated the Twins in Game 4 of their AL Division Series. Abreu hit a two-run rocket in the fourth inning off reliever Caleb Thielbar. Michael Brantley also went deep as the Astros hit 10 homers in the series. Abreu had eight RBIs. Houston will host Texas in Game 1 of the ALCS on Sunday. Justin Verlander is scheduled to take the mound for his 36th career postseason start.

Diamondbacks 4, Dodgers 2 – Diamondbacks 1st team to homer 4 times in postseason inning with big 3rd vs. Dodgers
The Arizona Diamondbacks became the first team to hit four home runs in a postseason inning when Geraldo Perdomo, Ketel Marte, Christian Walker and Gabriel Moreno went deep off the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Lance Lynn in the third inning of NL Division Series Game 3. Arizona, which won the first two games at Dodger Stadium in the best-of-five series, went ahead when Perdomo homered leading off the inning. After Marte and Walker went deep, Moreno hit a drive originally ruled a homer and changed to foul, then homered on the next pitch.

NFL – Lions LB Alex Anzalone’s parents in Israel among group of 50+ people from church
Detroit Lions linebacker Alex Anzalone’s parents are among about 50 people affiliated with a Naples, Florida-based church that is praying for their safe return from Israel this week. Israel has vowed an unprecedented offensive against Hamas after the Islamic militant group’s fighters broke through the border fence Saturday and stormed into the country’s south. The war between Israel and Hamas has claimed at least 2,200 lives and raged for a fifth day. First Naples Communications Pastor Andy Wells says the church made contact with Pastor Alan Brumback, who is also on the overseas tour, on Wednesday.

NFL – Bears’ offense and QB Justin Fields are showing signs of growth
The Chicago Bears are showing growth on offense. Star receiver DJ Moore says the offense has taken “a giant step” with two solid performances in a row. The Bears will try to keep that going when they host the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. Chicago stopped 14-game losing streak with a 40-20 win at Washington last week with Fields and Moore leading another big effort by the offense. The Bears racked up 451 yards against the Commanders after setting a season high with 471 the previous week against Denver, and their offense has jumped from 29th overall to 14th in that span.

NFL – Colts QB Anthony Richardson to miss at least 4 weeks after going on IR
Rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson will miss at least four weeks after the Indianapolis Colts put him on the injured reserve list. Richardson injured the AC joint in his right shoulder on a 4-yard run during Sunday’s win over Tennessee. With Richardson out, five-year veteran Gardner Minshew takes over as the starter. Minshew has played in four games this season, relieving the injured Richardson three times. Indy has won two of those games and Minshew’s only start at Baltimore. Colts coach Shane Steichen did not set a timetable for Richardson’s return. He also would not say if Richardson is expected to return this season.

The elder Malone spent three decades mostly as an assistant in the NBA and was best known for his work with the “Bad Boys” Pistons in the late 1980s and early 90s.

NCAAFB –Notre Dame hopes to rebound from 2nd loss while renewing rivalry with USC
No. 21 Notre Dame might be out of the College Football Playoff chase. Yet the Fighting Irish still have plenty to play for after seemingly sealing their postseason fate with a second loss in three weeks. On Saturday, they will try to rebound when they host longtime rival No. 10 Southern California. It is the fourth consecutive week Notre Dame has faced an undefeated opponent in prime time. Irish coach Marcus Freeman says he hopes the atmosphere and the rivalry will spur a rebound.

NCAAMBB – Bronny James is ‘doing well,’ USC coach Andy Enfield says at Pac-12 media day
Southern California basketball coach Andy Enfield said Bronny James, the oldest son of NBA superstar LeBron James, is “doing well” nearly three months after the prized recruit went into cardiac arrest while participating in a practice on campus. The coach didn’t offer any other details during Pac-12 media day in Las Vegas. The 18-year-old James went into cardiac arrest on July 24 as the team was holding offseason practices in preparation for a two-week European tour. LeBron James has said his son is progressing in his rehabilitation in hopes of playing for the Trojans this season.
