State Basketball Champions
Williams leads Benton Harbor to Class A title
(Ypsilanti-AP)
-- Livonia Franklin knew it was going to have a
problem dealing with Benton Harbor's size in Saturday's Class A
championship game.
The Patriots didn't know how bad it was going to be.
The Tigers outrebounded Livonia Franklin 52-23, including 21 from
Destiny Williams, and picked up their first state championship in
school history with a 60-46 victory. Williams, the runner-up for
Miss Basketball, added 31 points.
"This was the trophy I wanted this season," said Williams, who had
14 offensive rebounds — three more than the Franklin team. "I knew I
was going to have to come out strong if I wanted to be able to enjoy
this with my teammates."
Deborah Meeks added 15 points for Benton Harbor, which didn't get a
single point off the bench.
"I've only got eight players, and three of them can't play," said
Benton Harbor coach Lou Harvey. "We know we'll get 30 points and 17
or 18 rebounds from Destiny, and Meeks gives us something, and then
I just pray for the rest of them."
Briauna Taylor, the hero of Friday's overtime win over Detroit
Renaissance, led Franklin with 15 points and five rebounds.
"Guarding Destiny is tough, because she's bigger and longer than I
am," she said.
Williams had 19 points and 11 rebounds in the first half to lead
Benton Harbor to a 33-21 lead.
"We tried to front her in the first half, but we had to abandon
that," Franklin coach Dave McCall said. "We were drained after that
game last night, and you can't play against that team with
three-quarters of a tank."
The Patriots started the second half with a 12-2 run, but couldn't
stop Williams on the offensive glass. She had two putbacks in the
final minute of the third, helping the Tigers take a 41-35 lead into
the fourth.
Williams was the only Tiger to score in the third, but her teammates
started hitting shots in the fourth and Benton Harbor pulled away
for the win.
"They were grabbing and holding our rebounders, but we were still
getting out to run," Harvey said. "When we run, we're gone, and we
never get tired."
